Built for British Columbia

Gibsons metal roofing: a roof that cannot rust.

BC is a coastline, a rainforest, a snow belt and a fire zone, sometimes on the same drive. Here is what an Interlock® aluminum roof does about each.

Salt air

Aluminum cannot rust

There is no iron in aluminum, so there is nothing to rust. It forms its own thin oxide layer, which re-forms if the surface is scratched. That is why it is the metal for oceanfront homes, island cabins and anywhere the wind carries salt.

Wildfire

Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly

Under ASTM E108 a fire classification belongs to an assembly, not a panel. On our roofs Class A is achieved with two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood, and the aluminum itself does not ignite. Ask us to quote the assembly if your home backs onto forest or grassland.

Reflectance

Reflectance, rated colour by colour

Most Alunar® colours are rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC), which publishes each colour's solar reflectance (0.25 to 0.44 when new) and thermal emittance (0.83 to 0.86). Lighter and metallic colours reflect more. The Alunar® finish is warranted for 30 years.

Energy

Colour and summer heat

Lighter colours absorb less summer sun than dark ones. What that saves depends on climate, colour, insulation and attic ventilation, so we don't quote a figure.

Solar

The roof to put solar on

A solar array lasts 25 to 30 years. Put it on an asphalt roof and the panels often have to come off and go back on when the roof wears out underneath them. On an Interlock roof they come off at the end of their own life, not the roof's. Standing Seam takes clamp mounts with no holes drilled; the other profiles use mounting hardware made for metal roofing. At roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre the roof leaves more of the structure's capacity for the array, and your solar installer confirms the framing.

Wind

Locked on four sides

Interlock panels lock to each other on all four sides, with no exposed fastener for a storm to work at. Wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification.

Coastline: Province of British Columbia, Coastal Marine Strategy ↗ gives "more than 26,000 kilometres"; federal mapping gives 25,725 km. Product figures are the manufacturer's: interlockroofing.com ↗

    Why aluminum roofing, for Gibsons

Rain off the sound, salt on the breeze: a roof built for Gibsons.

    Ferry

Every job crosses Howe Sound first

Gibsons has no road link to the mainland; the BC Ferries run from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale is the way in. We plan each job around it: materials, crew and equipment come over together, so the old roof is not torn off until everything needed to close it in is on site.

    Rain

Close to 1.4 metres of rain a year

The Gibsons station averaged 1,370.8 mm of precipitation a year in the 1981–2010 climate normals. Aluminum absorbs no water, so there is no cedar to split and no granules for moss to hold. The concealed fasteners stay out of the rain.

    Salt air

Harbour houses and the sea breeze

Homes in Lower Gibsons look over the marina, and Roberts Creek sits along the beaches. Steel roofing depends on its coating near salt water; aluminum contains no iron, so it cannot rust, and it forms its own protective oxide layer.

    Forest

    Roberts Creek, under the trees

The SCRD's 2021 Community Wildfire Protection Plan notes the Roberts Creek plan sets a goal of reducing fire potential in interface areas, and projects about 16% less summer rain by the 2050s. Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly, on our roofs. Aluminum does not ignite; embers still reach gutters, so keep them clear.

    Recycled

    Up to 95% recycled aluminum

And the last tear-off your house is likely to need.

    Straight answers

Aluminum shingles in Gibsons: questions answered.

    All of our answers ↗

    Which communities does gibsonsroofing.com cover?

The Town of Gibsons, Lower Gibsons and Upper Gibsons, and Roberts Creek in SCRD Electoral Area D. Sechelt and the rest of the Sunshine Coast, up to Powell River, are covered at sunshinecoastroofing.com. Same company, same crews.

Do you install metal shingles and aluminum shingles in Gibsons?

Yes. Interlock® Slate, Interlock® Cedar Shingle, Interlock® Shake and Interlock® Mediterranean Tile are interlocking aluminum shingles and panels; we also install Interlock® Standing Seam and solid copper. The minimum roof slope is 3/12. We replace whole roofs and don't install asphalt.

Will an aluminum roof stand up to Gibsons rain and salt air?

Gibsons averaged 1,370.8 mm of precipitation a year at the Gibsons station (1981–2010 normals), and much of the town faces the water. Aluminum cannot rust because it has no iron in it, and it cannot rot. Under tall firs, gutters still fill with needles, so we tell you what to clear.

Do I need a building permit to replace my roof in Gibsons?

The Town of Gibsons Building Permit Guide (March 2025) lists "roof re-shingling and window replacement (no window enlargements)" under work that is exempt, while structural repairs still need a permit. Roberts Creek is under the Sunshine Coast Regional District's building department. We check what applies to your address before booking.

How much does a metal roof cost in Gibsons?

Our metal roof cost page gives price ranges from our BC contracts, profile by profile. Prices vary job to job with the structure of the roof and other conditions, so treat them as a rough guide only. An accurate price needs a roof consultation, on Zoom or in your home.

What does "Gibsons' Best Roof®" mean?

Best Roof® is a registered trademark of I.E.L. Manufacturing Ltd. and the name of the Interlock® aluminum roof in Canada. "Gibsons' Best Roof®" means that same roof, installed in Gibsons by our BC crews. It is a brand name, not a ranking.

    Free, no obligation

One more Gibsons roofing job, then never again.

A free consultation on Zoom or at your home: we go through profiles and colours with you, measure the roof, and give you a fixed price in writing. No pressure, and an honest date for the install.
